Statement of Purpose

It is the purpose of the Maury County Parks and Recreation Department to make the parks available for use by organizations and individuals for nonprofit recreational purposes while at the same time preserving them for future generations to enjoy.


Parks

The Maury County Parks and Recreation Department oversees the care and maintenance of almost 500 acres, and includes 5 parks:   

Maury County Park is 242 acres located in the heart of Columbia containing passive recreational areas including two miles of hiking trail, a paved walking trail, and Tony's Trail, an ADA-acccessible motorized trail as well as Jared's Dream, an ADA-accessible playground.  Maury County Park also offers the Lindsey Nelson Football Stadium, Little League baseball fields, an equestrian area, Fairgrounds, the Baker and Exhibit Buildings as well as eight (8) pavilions.  Each pavilion offers electric and running water hookups and a grill.  All pavilions are wheelchair accessible.  In addition, Maury County Park is home to one of the nation's largest permanent miniature train tracks.  Maury County Park hosts the annual Maury County Fair, Mule Days, The Train Stop Storytelling Festival, Live, Laugh, Love Your Wedding, Dog Days and other special events. 

Williams Spring Park is a 25-acre park located in Mt. Pleasant.  Williams Spring park contains open recreational areas, a playground, restrooms, a walking/biking trail and three (3) picnic pavilions.  Each pavilion provides electric and running water hookups, and a grill.

Chickasaw Trace Park is a 232-acre park located off Highway 7.  Chickasaw Trace is a naturalist-based park including seven (7) miles of hiking/bike trail, mountain bike trails, primitive campsites, and a boat ramp that accesses the Duck River.  Also available are the Derryberry Log Cabin, two (2) picnic pavilions, two (2) mini-shelters and a wheelchair accessible restroom.  Chickasaw Trace Park is also home to a remote-control air field.  The Derryberry Cabin is the official home of the Duck River Tellers.

Jerry Erwin Park is a 20-acre park located in Spring Hill.  Jerry Erwin Park contains passive recreational areas, a paved walking trial, three (3) small picnic shelters and restroom availability.  It is situated next to the historic Spring Hill Battlefield. 

Hampshire Park is a six-acre park located in Hampshire and is a shared facility with the Hampshire Unit School.  Hampshire Park contains playgrounds, a paved walking trail, basketball goals and one (1) wheelchair-accessible pavilion that provides an electrical outlet and a grill. 

Use of Parks

Maury County Parks and Recreation events will take precedence over all other activities.  Residents of Maury County will receive priority use of parks on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Denial of use is not limited to:

  • a finding that the use will be for profit;

  • a finding that the event will unreasonably interfere with others' use and enjoyment of the park facilities;

  • a finding that the use will damage or harm park facilities; and

  • a finding that the use will violate the standards set forth in the Private Act

Hours of Operation

Maury County Parks and Recreation shall be open to the public every day between dawn and dark.  Hours of operation change correspondently with seasonal time changes.  Summer hours of 8 am until 9 pm shall be in effect Friday, March 18, 2011. 

Metal Detector/Remote Flyers Policies

  • Maury County Parks and Recreation allows metal detectors in all parks except Jerry Erwin Park, which is a historic park and detectors are NOT ALLOWED; and

  • A Remote Flyer field is only available at Chickasaw Trace Park
