If you live in the city limits, you will have to contact Public Works Dept. http://www.columbiatn.com/government/public_works . If you live in the county, you will have to contact MC Highway Dept. at 931-375-6202.

1. What is absentee voting?

Absentee voting is a voting method that involves voting on a day earlier than the actual election day.

Tennessee has two forms of absentee voting:

1. Absentee in person, which is better known as early voting, and
2. Absentee by mail, which is commonly called by-mail voting.

2. Who can vote absentee?

  To vote by mail, a registered voter must fall under one of the following categories:

1. The voter will be outside the county of registration during the early voting period and all day on election day;
2. The voter or the voter’s spouse is enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited college or university outside the county of registration;
3. The voter’s licensed physician has filed a statement with the county election commission stating that, in the physician’s judgment, the voter is medically unable to vote in person. The statement must be filed not less than seven (7) days before the election and signed under the penalty of perjury;
4. The voter resides in a licensed facility providing relatively permanent domiciliary care, other than a penal institution, outside the voter’s county of residence;
5. The voter will be unable to vote in person due to service as a juror for a federal or state court;
6. The voter is sixty (60) years of age or older;
7. The voter has a physical disability and an inaccessible polling place;
8. The voter is hospitalized, ill, or physically disabled and unable to appear at the polling place to vote (this includes persons who have underlying medical or health conditions which in their determination render them more susceptible to contracting COVID-19 or at greater risk should they contract it.) 9. The voter is a caretaker of a person who is hospitalized, ill, or physically disabled (this includes voters who care for or reside with persons who have underlying medical or health conditions which in their determination render them more susceptible to contracting COVID-19 or at greater risk should they contract it.). 10. The voter is a candidate for office in the election;
11. The voter serves as an election day official or as a member or employee of the election commission;
12. The voter’s observance of a religious holiday prevents him or her from voting in person during the early voting period and on election day;
13. The voter or the voter’s spouse possesses a valid commercial drivers license (CDL) or the voter possesses a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card and certifies that he or she will be working outside the state or county of registration during the open hours of early voting and Election Day, and has no specific out-of-county or out-of-state address to which mail may be sent or received during such time.
14. The voter is a member of the military or is an overseas citizen.

4. Where do I submit my request to vote absentee?

Your request to vote absentee must be received in our office no earlier than ninety (90) days prior to an election and no later than seven (7) days prior to an election.  Your request may be received via email to eshouse@maurycounty-tn.gov,  or by mail to the Maury County Election Commission, 1207A Tradewinds Drive, Columbia, TN  38401.

5. Can the ballot be hand delivered to the office?

No.  The by-mail ballot cannot be hand delivered to the office.  It must be returned by postal mail.

1. What is the difference between unruly and delinquent charges?

An unruly offense is a charge that only a child under the age of 18 can receive, for example runaway is an offense that someone 18 years of age or older could not be charged with. A delinquent charge is an offense that an adult could also be charged with, for example theft of property.

2. When do I come for court?

On your petition or citation, it will list a court date and time. For Part I court your case will typically be set for any Tuesday at 1 p.m, on the other hand Part II (Mount Pleasant) is typically the 3rd Thursday of the month at 8:30 a.m. Do not arrive late for court, you may be asked to come back another day. If you are unsure about your court date contact the Juvenile Court Clerk.

3. What should I wear to court?

Attire should not include:

• Hats
• Low Cut Shirts
• Ripped Jeans
• Shorts
• Tank Tops
• Any Other Clothing That Is Revealing

Males are expected to tuck in their shirt and have their pants at waist level. If you show up to court in unacceptable clothing you will be sent home.

4. Who should come to court with me?

A parent or guardian must accompany you to court, no exceptions. If you have turned 18 years of age since you received your petition you may come to court by yourself. If a parent or guardian is unable to attend with you please be sure to contact the Clerk at 931-375-1117 or 931-375-1118.

5. What happens when the judge calls my name?

In Part I Court when the judge calls your name, proceed up the aisle on the right side of the courtroom and stand at the podium facing the judges bench, if the judge calls you to the bench do not place your hands on it. When your case is finished please exit to the left.

In Part II Court when the judge calls your name, proceed up the center aisle and stand at the front table facing the judge. Exit back down the same aisle out the back door of the courtroom.

6. What if I misplaced the paperwork I was given in court?

Some documents are available online, otherwise you will need to return to the Maury County Courthouse.

7. How do I pay my court costs?

Court costs should be paid in full or payments arranged the day you appear in court, if you fail to do so please return to either the Part I or Part II Court Clerk. 

8. Can I bring my cellphone with me to court?

Yes, but please make sure that it is either turned off or silenced. If it rings during court it may be taken away from you.

9. I hear that the Columbia Police Department will no longer being running a program for Public Service Work?

Yes, that is true. However, your child still owes all hours that were ordered. View details on the new program.

10. I want to have my child locked up in jail or at least have a tour of the jail, how do I do that?

It is not common practice or policy for juveniles to be detained, only specific situations warrant a juvenile being detained in a secure facility. Due to Federal guidelines, no juvenile should ever be detained in a jail with adults. At this time Maury County Juvenile Court does not conduct tours of the jail and Middle Tennessee Juvenile Detention Center does not offer tours of their privately owned facility. Maury County Juvenile Court does not maintain or operate Middle Tennessee Juvenile Detention Center.

The Teen Advisory Board meets on the last Tuesday of every month at the Maury County Public Library. Additional hours as requested for special programs and projects.
